Double Opt-In
A two-step email subscription process where the user must confirm their signup by clicking a link in a verification email.
Double opt-in (also called confirmed opt-in) is a subscription method where a new subscriber must complete two steps: first, they enter their email address in a signup form, and second, they click a confirmation link in a verification email sent to that address. Only after clicking the link are they added to the mailing list.
Benefits of double opt-in:
- Eliminates typos: If someone mistypes their email, the confirmation never arrives — preventing hard bounces later
- Blocks bots: Automated form submissions can't complete the confirmation step
- Proves consent: Provides clear evidence of opt-in for GDPR, CAN-SPAM, and CASL compliance
- Higher engagement: Double opt-in lists consistently show 20-30% higher open rates because every subscriber actively confirmed their interest
- Cleaner lists: Virtually eliminates invalid addresses, disposable emails, and spam traps
When to use single vs. double opt-in: Single opt-in maximizes list growth speed and is common for lead magnets and e-commerce. Double opt-in maximizes list quality and is recommended for newsletters, B2B lists, and any list where deliverability is critical. Even with single opt-in, you should use real-time email verification (like SendSure's form widget or API) to catch invalid addresses at signup.
